Short daily devotionals for the socially distanced. These are thoughts from my daily time in the word. I use a bible reading plan that will have me in a different section of Scripture every day.

Reading: 1 Corinthians 9-11

12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

1 Co 10:12–13 (ESV)

Sorry that it is late today. Trying to spend more focused time with the family on Easter weekend.

As a pastor, I am both fascinated and deeply concerned by what will emerge as the damaging effects of a people forced to live in isolation. We have always known that we were designed for community, but our experience of that has been mostly abstract and hasn’t had to be seriously tested in our generation over any prolonged period of time. It is being tested now.

People are now locked away with the demons and temptations that don’t respect social distancing. I am saddened to hear of and see the impact that is having on people who are tired of fighting those demons and who ordinarily used the warm light of community as a place to temporarily escape them. Now, they live with us, all the time, and we cannot leave.

Some friends have serious addictions that are now significantly more difficult to face.

Some friends are developing addictive patterns of behavior as we speak. What started as funny memes about day drinking are now a few weeks into a pattern of daily dependence on the numbing effects of something to take the edge off that we don’t truly know how we will break once this is over.

Many of us are just facing regular old temptations that are amplified in this season. I thought I was over most of my temptations to anger and grumpy outbursts until I got locked in a house for three weeks. It is amazing what surfaces.

Here is a key truth to remember in all of it.

12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Paul holds a key tension.

Don’t be presumptuous AND don’t be defeatist. God is faithful in the midst of temptation and if we turn to Him, He provides a way of escape. And so friends, be smart, don’t presume that you won’t be tempted in new and difficult ways in this season. Keep your eyes open! But, when it comes, true to the Lord, run to Him, and He will show you a way to escape it.

Courage, dear friends.
Ross
